Red Wine Chronicles: Past Entries

back in the day when i had some down time on the road i would sit in my hotel room or the back of the bus and reflect on some of the cool things i would see on tour, or even just random cool things i found on the internet, like old interviews of musicians etc. mind you this is also when myspace and youtube were exploding for the first time. i couldn’t believe that i could type in any of my favourite artists and see old performances and documentaries and what not. anyway i would sit with a glass of red wine and chronicle all of my stories, journals and internet findings. i called them the red wine chronicles and i would post them as blogs on myspace. haha myspace. you watch i bet it will come back! i’ve posted most of them already but i came across a few that were never posted. they’re from a few years back but i’ve decided i might as well share them with you anyway (you can find them below this post). it’s not much but here you go. also, i’m changing the name now to “CHRONICLES FROM THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE AND EVERYWHERE”

Red Wine Chronicles 7

I was looking through some old photos and I came across this one. It’s from the chuck era tour. In the last song of every show I would play drums for pain for pleasure. Tommy lee was there and had climbed up the lighting truss and was right above me about 25 feet. I had no idea of course. Right as the song kicked in he dumped bag after bag of flour all over me making it impossible for me to play. I had no idea what was happening at the time. I couldn’t see anything. And that much flour ws really heavy. The drums go completely dead when they’re covered in flour. It was like trying play drums on a bunch of pillows. We ended up having a big party that night and instead of changing or showering I just said fuck it and I just partied all night covered in flour. that was a very fun year and a half of touring. As always we went everywhere we could around the world. Had a blast. Saw things I never thought I would. Saw things I never wanted to see. That was the last tour of most of us being single. It was a particularly crazy time. But I guess it’s still kind of crazy now minus a few debaucheries.

I love Chicago. We just played our first show of the does this look infected anniversary tour in Chicago. I was a bit nervous because were paying songs we haven’t played in years. It’s our first tour of America in 8 years. And also playing songs we’ve never played at all ever. There was a lot to think about on stage that night. But it all came together perfectly and the crowd couldn’t have been better. We’ve been very fortunate with our audience. We never seem to have a bad one wherever we go. The most common interview question we get next to “what does sum 41 mean”? is what city has the best crowd? And I can never answer it because everywhere we go the crowds respond the same. It’s always over the top and exciting. Which makes us excited and fun is had by all! We had some friends fly in for the show which is always cool to have some moral support on the first show. And also makes for a great after party!

If you didn’t get to see any shows here’s what the set list looked like.

So here we are. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere. I have no idea what state we’re in. We’re touring across America for the first time in 8 years. I will be honest I was a little nervous if anyone would even show up to the shows. But sure enough the whole 2 month tour has been amazing. There hasn’t been one bad show. In fact I’ve been blown away at the intensity of the crowds. All I can say is thank you to all the fans for making this a sold out tour! it’s been very fun, exciting and also tough at times since touring in the winter has it’s difficulties. Most of us got quite sick multiple times through out the tour. which makes it difficult for me being the singer and not really having much a voice to even speak with. In some of the cities it was so unbearably cold with tons of snow. I’m from Canada and I couldn’t even handle it! But we managed to make it through all the bullshit and had a blast at the same time. I can’t wait to get some new music out and come back around again. Not sure when that will be but I guarantee we will be back again eventually.

This is the view from our bus. It was 5 degrees this day.rwc5

Open Your Eyes (Alternative Version)

i have a whole stock pile of old sum 41 stuff saved in storage.  versions of songs that never got used, old demos, unreleased tracks etc. i found something the other day that i had forgotten about. this was the original version for the song open your eyes. it has a shorter first chorus and a different guitar solo. this was the way i intended the song to be but somehow it got changed in the studio along the way. i ended up using this solo in a different song later on, but i always liked this version and i still do. here ya go.

hello world. it’s been awhile since i last gave an update. it’s the end of the night for me and it’s time to watch some american dad (my new favourite show for the past few months) and fall asleep. i don’t get much time to watch any tv with all the touring and recording which is kind of cool in a way because when i get into a show i get to watch so many episodes all at once. for the past few weeks i’ve locked myself away in my writing room for hours on end. most days are great, but like every album some days are better than others. today was a pretty decent day, i started writing 2 new songs and hopefully will finish them soon and add them to the pile. i have quite a few ideas right now with lots of different sounds and different parts. i know, that sounds very vague, but at this stage i’m still trying out so many different ideas and seeing what works best for each song. i’m trying out songs and then recording them in completely different ways to see what sounds best for that particular song. i’ll take a song and make it sound 5 different ways, making it heavier or softer, slower or faster, different drum beats etc. i’ve figured out the vibe and the feel of the record, which is always the most important part for me. once i have the direction it’s just a matter of filling in the blanks. right now there’s pile of puzzle pieces in front of me and i’m in the middle of trying to put them all together. In time i’ll start posting some video of what i am working on.  i’m still doing all my physio therapy and  i’ve added playing basketball into my daily routine now. it’s helping me get my strength back to walk again. it’s still a little difficult but it’s getting a lot better. also i’ve been approached lately to write and produce for few different artists, and also music for movies and television. i’m really excited about that because they’re all such different styles of music. it’s challenging but also a fun exercise for the mind. i love all kinds of music and i love trying out new things that i’ve never done before. at this point in my life i’m looking for new paths to walk down while being open minded and and excepting of new challenges. all in all life is great and i’m excited about the future. i still can’t wait to be on tour again though. hopefully that will be soon.

take care, love ya all!

night out with motley

it used to be a drunken booze fuelled party for me when i would go hang with motley. those days are long ago and done for all of us now that we’re all sober. but that didn’t stop it from being an fucking amazing concert. with all the pyro, lights, production last but not least the fucking music it was definitely one of the best shows i’ve ever seen!. it’s sad that this is the final tour. but what a way to go out. if you’ve never seen motley live before you should make it a priority to see this spectacle before it’s gone forever.

7pm: ariana and i left the house and drove down to irvine california to the verizon wireless amphitheater. it was my first time driving in about 2 years. i was a little nervous because of my legs being so fucked up still, but we got there safe with no accidents, phewww. we got there and grabbed our passes and went strait to our seats leaving only about 5 mins til motley hit the stage.

9pm: the lights went out and the show started. tommy hooked me up with amazing seats and all access passes. (thanks tommy!) we were so close you could feel the enormous heat from the pyro. if it was that hot where we were standing, i can only imagine how hot it must have been playing on stage a few feet from all that fire.

the show was over around 11 or so and even though they played pretty much everything you’d want them to play, i still wanted more. it was such a dynamic show with flying drum solos, second stages and nikki’s fire dick, you never knew what was going to happen next. i’ve seen them play many times in the past and it was always amazing, but this was by far the best show i’ve ever seen them do.

after the show we went back stage to hang with tommy and sophi. talked to mick mars for a bit, he’s such a sweetheart and also saw my great old friend devon bronson with his girlfriend jessica.

we stayed late enough to beat all the traffic leaving the show and were pretty much the last people there. except for this one completely wasted guy smoking a shit ton of weed and getting totally drunk off his ass sitting on my car. i thought he was quite hilarious though. he was so fucked up and told us his girlfriend had passed out half way through the show and was asleep in his car. he stared at me for awhile saying he knew me from somewhere and kept asking me questions to try and figure it out. the only question he didn’t ask me was “hey aren’t you in a band”? haha. he finished his smoke and his beer and jumped into his car to drive him and his wasted girlfriend home. hope they made it. (don’t drink and drive. take a fucking cab and save a life or two)

all in all it was an awesome night. go see the show before it’s too late!

Original “Crash” Demo

i was going through my old cassette tapes of ideas today and i came across the original demo of the song “crash”. this recording was made about an hour after i witnessed a horrible car crash where one of the drivers was killed instantly. it all happened right before my eyes. i was the first one there and jumped out of my car immediately trying to help but i could feel the lifelessness in the air, you could just tell he was dead and there was nothing i could do. i’ve seen a few people die in front of me in my life and it’s definitely a bizarre moment to see the life being taken out of someone. i went home and wrote this song in minutes and recorded this version. and now, after everything i’ve been through recently this song holds new meaning for me. it’s not much different than the album but i like this version because i remember exactly how i felt when i was putting it down. i used to have this big open room with a nice grand piano. i would love to come down in the mornings and play for awhile as i was waking up. the room had really high ceilings and gave off this great natural reverb. it felt like being in a big concert hall. it was almost a haunting sound in that room. it made you feel very alone. and i don’t think i could have written crash if it didn’t sound like that.

Another update

night out for dinner with my two special ladies. my mum michelle and my fiancé ariana.

we had an amazing dinner with a few friends the other night and it was the first time I have gotten to go out for a fun night since i was released from the hospital.

I also had a little jam session at my house earlier in the day and  it was so fun to play some of the old songs again. it gives me inspiration to write songs again along with the touring itch.  right now i’m having my studio worked on because theres are a few things in there that aren’t working right (ah,the joys of having your own studio.), but after today it should be back and rocking. I got some good writing done today and i can’t wait to get it all down and recorded.

I hope that you are all doing well and staying safe.

i’ll keep you posted,

D+ARIstudioD JAM

hello everyone it’s great to be writing to you. i feel great with my recovery and it’s going very well. my days are quiet full but i work on getting better every day. i have doctor check ups often and i’ve had so many needle pricks in the past few months, that all the veins in my arms are dead. i do a lot of physical therapy because my legs have gotten very numb from my knees down. i’m only now starting to be able to get up and walk on my own, but it’s still very painful. i also have one on one therapy which i love, then i top that off with AA a few times a week. i try to save my weekends for all of my business meetings. the progress may seem slow to some people but i’m getting better all the time and i love being sober. there’s lots of writing going on as well and i have a few exciting things for a new record already. i can’t wait to get back out there and see you all again.

just the good ol boys (Update)

brown sound and i hanging in my backyard with sinatra! fun times hanging out with an old friend again, we haven’t seen each other in 7 years! we were soaking up the sun, playing some of my favourite guitars, laughing and watching funny movies. just like old times.

Rock Bottom

hey everyone, it’s deryck here. sorry i’ve been so m.i.a. lately, but i’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital. the reason i got so sick is from all the hard boozing i’ve been doing over the years. it finally caught up to me. i was drinking hard every day. until one night. i was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around mid night and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden i didn’t feel so good. i then collapsed to the ground unconscious. my fiancé got me rushed to the hospital where they put me into the intensive care unit. i was stuck with needles and i.v.’s all over. i was completely sedated the FIRST WEEK. when i finally woke up the next day i had no idea where i was. my mum and step dad were standing over me. i was so freaked out. my liver and kidney’s collapsed on me. needless to say it scared me straight. i finally realized i can’t drink anymore. if i have one drink the doc’s say i will die. i’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. i didn’t, and look where that got me. (i never thought i would ever say that! haha) anyway i have my passion and inspiration back for writing music. i already have a few song ideas for new songs. soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again. see you all sometime! there will be more posts again so say up to date friends.

CarSomebody’s day really sucks! Haha. My day on the other hand is great! We’ve been on tour for awhile and every show keeps getting better. The crowds are great as usual and its great to see so many people again. I’m always grateful for having this loyal of a fan base after so many years of touring. I’m sitting in the middle of nowhere. It’s fucking hot, sweaty and almost unbearable. I’ve only slept for a couple of hours and I’m so excited to get on stage and play a show right now! You guys give me the energy. I also bought a beautiful new guitar. It’s actually old but new to me. I have somewhat of an addiction with musical equipment. And this guitar just looked too nice and also happened to be pretty rare. It’s a combination of year, type of wood, certain paint etc. You know, nerdy stuff. But basically there’s only 25 in the world so I felt like I should get it. It’s a 59 les paul. I can’t wait to here it in the studio. Anyway, it’s time for the wine and to hit the stage. Talk to you all soon.

Red Wine Chronicles #3

I crashed my plane! Fuck! No not a real one obviously. I only have one hobby outside of sum 41 and it’s flying RC planes. I was turned on to it a few years ago by my friend John Asher. I always thought it sounded stupid when he would talk about until he brought this plane over to my house that was the size of me and we started flying it through neighborhoods in Beverly hills. I ended up crashing mine into a 20million dollar mansion. That’s when I realized, hmmm I can have fun with this. It’s not an easy, or cheap hobby though. I’ve crashed so many planes by accident. But this particular accident was kind of bad. The plane I was flying burst into flames in the middle of the air and became a giant remote control fire ball flying at 60 miles per hour that I was completely responsible for!  Luckily nothing bad happened and I was able to crash land it with no real damage to anything else or anybody. Phew! But nonetheless I’m bummed I have no plane.

Plane Crash

Red Wine Chronicles #2

At the hotel for a day off. It’s a bit hot and muggy here today. I’m sure the show will be fun tomorrow nonetheless. Sitting around listening to some Bob Dylan. Going over new set list ideas. I’m trying add some songs into the set that we haven’t played in a long time or ever played at all. The only struggle has been that we haven’t been able to get many sound checks to practice these songs on this tour. Oh well, we’ll be on the road for awhile so as we keep going there will be new things changing throughout out the set list from time to time. All in all it’s great to be back out on tour after a long break. I’m going to keep working on these songs and then retire to the beach outside of my room!

Red Wine Chronicles #1

Hello everyone. Sitting in the back lounge of our bus, after a show, somewhere in the middle of spain. Enjoying a nice glass of red wine thinking about the future of Sum 41. Brown Tom and I have been talking a little bit about writing some new music. Which we will probably get to after a few more months of touring. We still have some unfinished business to attend to. Unfortunately because of my back injury we were forced to cancel a huge part of our SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER WORLD TOUR. So now we’re back at it again and going everywhere we can. We still want to tour north and south America. And hopefully we’ll know more about that soon. If it was up to us we would never stop touring, but the powers that be get in the middle sometimes. It’s been amazing to tour all over the world year after year and see all you crazy motherfuckers every night. And we don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon!

In other Sum 41 news we’ve decided to part ways with island defjam. There’s no juicy story or anything, we both just felt like it was time. We’re on our own now and to be honest it feels great. The shittiest part of the music business is the actual business part, that unfortunately you can’t avoid. I’ve recently been remixing DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED for a 10 year anniversary re-release. I was never very happy with the way that record sounded. I knew there was more excitement and heaviness in that record that didn’t come through on the final mixes. So once we figure out the business side of it I would love to put that out as soon as possible with a bunch of extra shit, like photos, demos, documentary, etc.

Thanks for checking out the website. And keep checking back. I plan on keeping you all updated with all our tour stories from the road.
